2011_hero_picMaking Music Being Well, coming soon to a community near you!

Participation in Making Music Being well has grown ten-fold since it's inception in 2006. From mass sing-alongs to uke playing, music jams, open mics sessions, rehearsals, playground activities, drumming - the benefits of music-making are truly heard and celebrated around the country by the old and young, able and not-so-able.

Making Music Being Well celebrates the links between making music and feeling good. It's an initiative of Music: Play for Life, the Music Council of Australia's national music advicacy campaign to get more Australians making music, and the Australian Music Therapy Association.

The benefits of music are used by music therapists in hospitals, schools, community organisations and nursing homes. Read more.

What happened in 2011? A snapshot of what took place around the country:

Winthrop Primary School, WA hosted a number of musical groups from around the community as part of its Making Music Being Well week. The school took part in “busker’s week” with parents, teachers, students and some professional musicians joining in to spread the message that everyday involvement in music contributes to a sense of wellbeing.

All the students at Broadmeadows Special School, VIC danced and played the night away at their Thursday disco.

The octogenarian rockstars of the Silverbeats staged a Flash Mob in an Adelaide shopping mall tp brighten the day of unsuspecting shoppers.

Chooks on a Hot Tin Roof, Milton, NSW, the all-playing, all-singing, all-female ukulele group entertained the local residents of Sarah Claydon nursing home with an afternoon concert and singalong.

Hong Kong: yes, 2011 we went global, bringing Hong Kong into the fold with hundreds of music making events, including a 'Music Marathon': a 24 hour, non stop music making extravaganza.
